The Department of English of S.M Dev College commenced its journey from 1995, the very year the College was established. The department of English has been an integral part of the college since its inception. The aim of the department has been to promote the learning of English as a language of communication as well as the study of English Literature. At its early stage, the department offered three-years degree course as per the prescribed syllabus of Assam university. With the introduction of CBCS in the year 2018, the department has been offering undergraduate courses in the subjects of English, Alternative English and Communicative English. The department is committed to give quality education and persistently works to achieve its goal for the greater interest of the society.
The vision of the department of English is to provide quality oriented teaching which seeks to bring out the potentiality of the students by cultivating critical thinking, fostering creativity and promoting cultural understanding through the study and appreciation of literature, language and writing. The department also aspires to develop itself as a centre for academic excellence through teaching that encourages and nurtures literary sensibilities, language competence and communication skills.
The mission of the department is to strive to offer rigorous academic programs, innovative courses and experiences that may educate students in the rich traditions of literature, language and writing. The department of English aims at transforming the students into rational human beings with an inquisitive bent of mind through literary, theoretical and linguistic teaching. With the advent of NEP, the department offers various courses under the FYUG curriculum that aims to provide career oriented knowledge, life skills as well as building a strong foundation of literary sensibilities and language competence.
