The Department of History in Satindra Mohan Dev College came into being since the establishment of the College in the year 1995. Currently the Department of History offers B.A. course and the syllabus of B.A course is framed based on Assam University, Silchar CBCS guidelines and NEP 2020. The Department has had an illustrious faculty and many areas of Indian History have been defined by the researches done by them and the Department members often take part in National and International seminars, Faculty development programmes, conferences etc. The Department follows a multi-pronged teaching approach, balancing a curriculum which can equip the students for careers anywhere, in academia or outside, with a sharp focus on developing cutting-edge research potential among students, to make them nationally and globally competitive. Teaching combines standard lectures with student-focussed interactive sessions, discussions, and presentations, including analysis of primary texts by students to equip them for research. The Department aims at making it as a centre of excellence for study. The main objective of studying history is to gain insights into the past, understand the evolution of societies, learn from past successes and failures, and develop a broader perspective on current events. So, the main objective of the department is to impart quality education in the various fields of History subject. The department also aims to introduce the students with major trends of changes and developments in the life and culture of the humanity and to acquaint the students to the emerging branches of historical studies and thought and creation of a new generation of historians. The Department of History also conduct field trips to enrich the knowledge of the students in the field of History.

VISION

To infuse positivism and values in students and enlighten them about the history of our nation and the world as well as regional history. The department aims to make the students aware of the past and its legacies through teaching, research and extension activities. The department believes that a critical understanding of the past will enable the students to understand the present and help them look towards the future.

• Empower students to cope with the challenges of globalization by instilling in them a life-long passion for learning about the past. The knowledge about the interconnections among the global, national, regional and local history will equip the students to face the challenges with confidence.
